Easy Songs To Sing

A lot of people who want to start singing ask what songs are good to start with. They are looking for easy songs to sing. Thankfully there are plenty by singers with a limited range, their songs are excellent beginners' material. Starting with one of Mariah Carey's 90's songs is not a good idea, unless you have a naturally dynamic voice. The same goes for other multi-octave spawning vocalists such as Whitney Houston and Beyonce. No, to start you want something that perhaps uses 2 octaves, and you'd be surprised how many artists these days use a limited range. Note that having a 6000 octave voice does not mean you are a good singer. There are plenty of artists who have very pleasant voices but only use up to 2 octaves in their songs. Whether you want to expand your lower or higher range, there is plenty of material out there. So how do you pick a song? Try to determine in what octave you sound the best and sing the most comfortable. Listen to plenty of music and sing along with the song, eventually you will find a song that you can comfortably sing. Start with a song like that and then look for songs that are above or below the octaves used in the song you are comfortable with. This method is much more fun than doing dull warming up exercises. However, the exercises are strongly recommended to “activate” your voice before you begin.

I'm afraid there isn't a definite list of easy songs to sing because let's face it our voices are unique. I personally like “Free Fallin'” by Tom Petty. Other songs I have seen mentioned as easy songs to sing along with are “Sway” by Michael Buble, “Never say Never” by The Fray. In general ladies and gentlemen should be able to sing along quite easily with Abba songs. The same goes for most of the slower Beatles songs. Again, it's very hard to make a list because of the differences in vocal types. It really is a matter of trial and error, though if you already have favourites and you are comfortable singing those then by all means use them to warm up your voice. Singing songs comfortably implies that there is no strain, so if you feel any strain or you need to put too much pressure on your vocal chords then pick an easier song as that particular song isn't suitable for your voice at this point.
